We, the Democrats of Nye County (NCDCC), have a special commitment to the promise of America. We believe that every American whatever their background or station in life, should have the chance to get a good education, to work at a good job with good wages, to raise and provide for a family, to live in safe surroundings, and to retire with dignity and security.  We believe that quality and affordable health care is a basic right.  We believe that each succeeding generation should have the opportunity, through hard work, service and sacrifice, to enjoy a brighter future than the last.  Today we pledge a return to core moral principles like stewardship, service to others, personal responsibility, shared sacrifice and a fair shot for all values that emanate from the integrity and optimism of our Founders and generations of Americans since.  Today, we Democrats offer leaders – from the White House to the Town Hall – worthy of this country’s trust.

We submit our platform as follows:

  • Strengthen Medicare and Social Security
  • Stop referring to Social Security and Medicare as entitlements; these programs are a safety net paid for through our tax dollars.
  • Eliminate Medicare Advantage and put the funds to the regular Medicare program. Eliminate the salary level caps on Social Security.
  • Any proposal on reducing the national debt shall not include Social Security or Medicare.

  • Continue the progress made with the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and continue to expand coverage and reduce costs.
  • Make information on health care more easily accessible to the public.
  • We support access to paid sick days and medical leave for all workers.

  • The Nye County Democratic Central Committee supports a constitutional amendment to overturn the disastrous U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Citizen’s United.
  • Create laws to provide more transparency on who is donating to candidates running for public office.
  • The NCDCC opposes any attempts to pass laws that restrict the right to vote, including voter ID laws.

  • Revise the Tax Code to eliminate loopholes and create fairness.
  • Stop corporate welfare.
  • Create penalties for U.S. companies that ship jobs to foreign countries.
  • Provide tax incentives for businesses that create jobs in the U.S.
  • Increase the highest tax rate on the wealthiest members of our society.

  • We support programs providing jobs to our veterans
  • Create more work for Nye County youth (18-25 years old)
  • Raise the minimum wage in Nevada to a living wage. ($15.00 per hour)
  • We support equal pay for equal work.
  • We strongly oppose the misclassification of workers; such as independent contractors.
  • We support the restoration of overtime protections for all workers

  • We support all workers’ right to form and join a union
  • We support al workers’ freedom to bargain collectively
  • We support the protection of Project Labor Agreements
  • We support labor protections for domestic workers and farm workers

Keep loan guarantees for renewable energy projects. Energy and jobs – to create tens of thousands of jobs, save energy, offer greater capacity to utilities, and make the U.S. less dependent on other nations for our energy:

  • Offer Municipal Bonds that are small enough for everyone to get involved and use the money to start installing energy efficient remodels on homes.
  • We support a renewal of the federal governments tax subsidies for families who switch to cleaner energy for their homes. (solar)
  • Retrofit every government building to make them as energy efficient as possible.  Allow the utility companies to finance the projects and “decouple”  their rates from energy usage and continue billing at the current rate until the financing is repaid, then reduce the rates.

The future of our children and our nation depends on high quality, affordable and accessible education at all levels from Pre-K and all the way up to a strong university system in Nevada. Children begin life full of inner motivation, self-esteem, dignity, cooperation, curiosity and joy in learning. The following measures must be undertaken to assure high quality, affordable and accessible education for our citizens:

  • Fully funded K-15 public education
  • Expansion of pre-school, after school and extra-curricular activities
  • Creation of specialized learning academies within all high schools providing paid internship and apprenticeship programs
  • We oppose the sole use of school test scores to determine funding levels, faculty and administrator compensation.
  • Achieve Accreditation of all schools in Nye County School District

  • We support comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship
